There are many good reasons to buy locally grown food. It puts money back into the local economy; it protects the environment by decreasing the usage of fossil fuel and plastic; it is healthier and fresher, because it doesn’t spend days and weeks traveling; it creates a sense of community, and it is usually cheaper. I think that these reasons are good enough to break the habit of going to the supermarket and start buying locally. However, if you are specifically looking for organic food, remember – locally grown isn’t necessarily a synonym for organic.
If you are addicted to coffee like me, there is no need to promise yourself to completely quit this habit. Drinking coffee in moderate amounts has certain health benefits, as far as you buy the best coffees available, which are, of course, organic.

7. Eat reasonable portions. Foreigners are usually shocked by the portions Americans eat. If you eat only when you are hungry and don’t overeat, you can save a great amount of money. It is always better to eat one organic apple than 3 non-organic ones, even if the organic one might be more expensive (although it doesn’t have to be if you are using co-op or shopping at local farmer’s markets).
8. If you are too lazy or suspicious to join co-ops and look for farmer’s markets, shop grocery stores selectively. There are certain non-organic foods, such as bananas or avocados, which tend to be lower in pesticide levels and therefore, are relatively safe.
