Organic Clothes – Luxury for Many, Neccessity for Some
Most of us understand the benefits of organic food products. Even if we stubbornly buy McDonald’s cheeseburgers every Tuesday, we know that putting junk food packed with chemicals and other questionable substances into our bodies is not good for us.
But what’s so great about organic clothes? Is it worth buying a $28 organic tank top, when you could buy an identical non-organic one for under 5 bucks at K-Mart? Are non-organic clothes really that bad?
In my opinion organic clothes are a luxury more than a necessity. Yes, organic cotton farming is not harmful for the environment and yes, it is probably better for your skin also. However, if you are like me and adore fashion, the organic clothes market is not big enough to satisfy your fashion needs. And unless you make a six-figure income, you will not like the prices either.
However, if you or your children have eczema or a very sensitive skin, that’s when investing in organic clothing and giving up on high fashion becomes a must.
There is a reason why the most popular type of organic clothing is organic baby clothing. A baby’s skin is very sensitive, so wearing chemical- and pesticide-free clothes reduces chances for the baby to get allergic reactions, develop rashes or eczema.
My son had severe eczema since he was 2 months old and the amount of money we spent on creams, ointments and doctor visits was 15 times more than an entire closet of organic clothes would cost. I am not saying that if we switched to purely organic baby items, his eczema would go away. I just mean that if we were willing to spend hundreds of dollars on doctors and creams, so this poor little thing wouldn’t suffer, we could have as well invested in organic infant clothes. But organic clothes were not popular at the time and we simply didn’t know anything about them.
So in case you can afford to save the environment and protect you skin by buying organic clothing, go for it. If not, don’t feel bad. There are many other ways to live organically and protect the Earth.
