How to Shop Organic on a Budget. Part 2

How to shop organic on a budget Part 1

Part 2:

7.    Eat reasonable portions. Foreigners are usually shocked by the portions Americans eat. If you eat only when you are hungry and don’t overeat, you can save a great amount of money. It is always better to eat one organic apple than 3 non-organic ones, even if the organic one might be more expensive (although it doesn’t have to be if you are using co-op or shopping at local farmer’s markets).

8.    If you are too lazy or suspicious to join co-ops and look for farmer’s markets, shop grocery stores selectively. There are certain non-organic foods, such as bananas or avocados, which tend to be lower in pesticide levels and therefore, are relatively safe. Foods like apples and potatoes have the highest levels of pesticide residue, so it is really important to buy them organic.

Here is my post about organic produce which is actually not bad.

9.    Grow your own produce if you can. You may be surprised how easy it is to grow tomatoes or eggplant in your backyard. There is a ton of information on the internet on how to do this.

10.    Learn how to cook. Admit that using a cake from a box, or making mashed potatoes from powder, is not really cooking. Roll up your sleeves and learn how to cook from scratch. It is not as bad as it sounds. I will teach you how to make organic muffins in less than 15 minutes (+25 minutes baking time); how to make organic deserts and easy lunch and dinner meals. “Easy” is the keyword here, because I know how busy and overwhelmed you are. How does organic pizza from scratch in 30 minutes, for less than 10 bucks sound to you?

11.    Buy a yogurt maker and a bread machine. They don’t have to be expensive. You can buy a bread machine for under $70 in Wal-Mart or a little fancier one on Amazon, and it will do all the baking for you. Really, you don’t even have to mix the ingredients. A bread machine can bake you different kinds of breads, make a cake and even make dough.

12.    Shop online for organic foods. Some retailers offer free shipping, especially if you are willing to buy in bulk. Save on gas and don’t forget to use Google for additional coupons.

13.    Remember the long-term benefits of organic foods. If you eat wise, you will eventually save tons of money on pills and doctors. Plus, now you know how and where to buy organic on a budget and have to save money and be healthy at the same time.
