Don’t Eat Enough Veggies? Give Vegetable Juice a Try
We all were told hundreds of thousands of times, that eating fruits and vegetables is important. The famous food pyramid suggests consuming 5 servings of veggies a day, but how many of us are actually doing it?
According to recent studies, not so many. Approximately 70% of Americans fail to eat their 5 servings of vegetables every day. No wonder, more and more Americans are visiting doctors and taking more and more medications. Pharmaceutical companies, despite economical crises, are as profitable as ever. A number of studies show that among other benefits, vegetables reduce risks of cancer, help improve our heart, memory function, vision, urinary tract and make your bones stronger.
Even if we try to eat healthy and plan our menus wisely, it is not easy to eat so many veggies. What do we do then? Yes, taking vitamins is great, but we still need nutrients. This is when vegetable juice comes to rescue.
According to recent study, which was done by researchers at the University of California, drinking vegetable juice daily can help you meet government daily vegetable recommendations. The results of the study showed that 50 % of people who drank one glass of vegetable juice a day and 100% of people who drank two, met their daily vegetable recommendations.
The interesting fact is that most of the drinkers said that they enjoyed drinking their vegetables and after 6 weeks of study they reported that they felt “more satisfied” with the ease of meeting their daily requirements.
Buying organic certified vegetable juices when available would be the most beneficial way to take your veggies. If you are really stubborn and would rather die than start drinking tomato and onion tasting juices, there are other alternatives. Some organic and non-organic brands make mixed fruit and vegetable juices. In my experience you can barely taste vegetables in these juices. However, be careful, because juices made of fruits are usually high in sugar, and I am sure you don’t want to gain unnecessary pounds while satisfying your daily veggie requirements.
